Potato leafhopper

 Virginia Tech Logo

Potato leafhopper nymph and adultIn Virginia, potato leafhopper damage usually occurs on the 2nd through 4th cuttings. Potato leafhopper feeding can cause more than 50% reduction in yield and up to a 25% reduction in protein content (quality). Potato leafhopper damage can also significantly reduce the longevity of the stand and permit increased weed growth. During the first growing season, spring-planted alfalfa fields are particularly attractive to potato leafhopper adults, and the young seedlings are very susceptible to leafhopper damage.
