Alfalfa varieties that express some
resistance or tolerance to potato leafhopper (PLH) are available.
These varieties display, in addition to simple pubescence, erect
glandular hairs (Figs. 1, 2, & 3) which PLH resistance has
been associated with. The actual mechanism of resistance is not
known, but may involve toxic or repellent compounds released
from the glandular hairs.
Do glandular-haired varieties
keep leafhopper populations low enough so you don't have to spray?
How do the yields of these varieties compare to standard alfalfa
varieties?
We are evaluating the performance of several glandular-haired
alfalfa varieties in Virginia. See 'Research
updates' and 'Reports
and articles' for progress reports.
